Key to the West

February 7, 2008

bedard.jpg“Is the deal done yet?” asked Mariners pitcher Miguel Batista to the Seattle Times.

Everyone is waiting for the trigger to be pulled on a trade that would bring lefty Orioles lefty Erik Bedard to Seattle for young gun Adam Jones, and improving reliever George Sherrill. Mariners fans have a reason to be antsy for Bedard is quite possibly one of the better pitchers in the major leagues – and he is only 28. Bedard’s stats have not been able to do him justice while pitching for the lowly Orioles his whole career – a team that can never get themselves out of the bottom of the dumpster.

The M’s won’t be getting Bedard at a low price though – they will be parting ways with Adam Jones – one of the better prospects in their system. One AL talent evaluator said Jones will be “a monster. If you put he and Nick Markakis in the same outfield, that is the start of something.”

The M’s can fortunately afford to part ways with Jones’ bat when they have Ichiro, Sexson, and Ibanez already in the lineup; although he would make a fine compliment. Also, who knows what kind of contribution Jones would make in ’08 with only 139 AB’s under his belt. What the M’s can’t afford to lose is the opportunity of acquiring one of the most promising young arms in the game. With a rotation headed up by Bedard (221 K’s, 3.13 ERA), Felix Hernandez (165 K’s, 3.92 ERA), and Batista (16 wins, 133 K’s), and one of the best closers in the game J.J. Putz (40 sv, 1.38 ERA), the M’s could hold the key to the West if they follow through with this trade.

Only one small problem. Some Angels might clog that key-hole.
